A recent research study from Sentai reveals a sharp truth: we delay getting support for our ageing loved ones — even when we know it puts them at risk.
Why? Not down to cost, but because of emotion: almost one in two (48%) say the biggest barrier is the older person resisting help. Older adults fear losing independence (53%) and being a burden (51%).
The national survey of 2,000 people was commissioned by Sentai to understand how older adults living alone are maintaining their independence and what barriers exist for families when looking to support their loved ones.
Families, it seems, are torn between wanting to intervene and fearing they’ll undermine dignity. That worry — unseen and uncounted — defines the emotional backdrop of ageing in Britain.
To support independent living and tackle those tough conversations 'before the worry'!
Constant worry when I’m not there — 33% say it's their biggest challenge.
"Behind every older person living at home alone, there's often a son, daughter or relative carrying invisible anxiety. Our survey shows how widespread that stress is. Sentai was created to give families peace of mind as much as to support the person themselves." Paul Statham, Sentai CEO.
There Is Hope — and It’s Human-Centered Tech
The surprising twist? 79% believe technology could support and 20% believe it could help "to a great extent." But only if it supports independence, flexibility, and feels human.
- 43% want solutions that adapt to their needs
- 30% would adopt tech if it helped their loved one stay independent longer
Sentai Exists To Change This Story
With gentle, human technology — Sentai helps those living alone with a friendly voice in the room and support to remain active and manage their wellbeing. By supporting daily tasks to stay well and independent, Sentai reduces concerns and becomes part of daily life before the worry.
Families can stay connected using the app to chat and check all is well during the times when they're not there in person. Sentai gives them space to have normal conversations with their loved ones, rather than a check list of tasks.
What’s Really Holding Us Back?
The biggest barrier to support is resistance from the older person (48%) from fear of losing their independence (53%).
65% of families are already deeply worried about loneliness of their loved ones and 43% are actively looking for flexible support options.
"We often think of safety in physical terms - avoiding accidents or falls - but our research proves loneliness is just as frightening for families. Sentai is designed as a companion as well as a safety net, because staying connected is what truly keeps people well." Peter Otto, Sentai Chief Product Officer.
